More football action is always something to celebrate. As the season continues and races for the postseason heat up, it's time to look into the best statistical performances from last week's action with another Showtime U Blog.
Showtime U Stats
Atascocita High School saw the most staggering quarterback performance in the school's history from Corbin Smejkal on Friday. The junior gunslinger tossed an efficient 18/21 for 394 total yards of offense. These stats were noteworthy already, but the eight touchdowns from Smejkal were the true standout, setting a new program record for touchdown passes in Atascocita Eagle history. Smejkal and the Eagles celebrated the monster 70-0 win and will look to continue their winning ways following this week's bye.
Tavis Coleman returns to the Showtime U segment after his performance against Pasadena Memorial. The trusty quarterback put the Shadow Creek High School Sharks on his back by delivering 15/23 passes to his receivers, totaling 343 yards gained through the air. Of the 15 passes completed to his receivers, 1/3 of them reached the end zone for an end-of-day total of five passing touchdowns. Coleman and the rest of the Sharks will have their sights set on an exciting matchup against the Manvel Mavericks this upcoming Friday.
Recent addition to The Protect U Crew, Cody Cooksey, left his mark for Oak Ridge High School during their rivalry matchup against Grand Oaks. The sensational 2029 running back flashed his excellence by torching the Grizzly defense for 276 total yards of offense and two touchdowns that sparked a near comeback for the War Eagles. Cooksey's bulk production throughout this season has led the up-and-coming running back to come within 40 yards of breaching 1,000 rushing yards for the season. Cooksey's sights will be set on Willis High School's defense this upcoming Friday, with the chance of securing the rushing milestone.
Continuing the trend of success from Protect U's running backs, Jalen Nelson proved to be an efficient offensive option for the Opelika High School Bulldogs. With just 15 touches, Nelson racked up 171 yards through the air and on the ground to go along with his five-touchdown performance. The 11.4 yards per touch lifted Opelika to victory, and they hope to continue their winning ways against Smiths Station on Friday.
Looking ot the college ranks, Rice's Tyvonn Byars proved that he can and should be the number one rushing option for the Owl offense. A workhorse offensively, Byars got 14 carries in Rice's game against ECU, which he took for 111 yards and a touchdown. Byars continues to work in the weight room and on the field, showing just how much he wants to be the primary attack on the ground for the Houston-based program.
On the flip side of Cody Cooksey's performance in The Battle of the Oaks, Grand Oaks' Darnell Jackson Jr. lit up the War Eagle secondary with his blistering speed. The future Utah Ute receiver snagged four catches for the Grizzlies, turning those catches into 97 receiving yards and two touchdowns. The .500 average on receptions into touchdowns did not go unnoticed by Grand Oaks as they hung on to win the rivalry matchup ahead of a gimme game against Caney Creek on Friday.
The last of the offensive selections for this week's Showtime U, Derrick McCullar II, turned the heat up on offense to give Cypress Ranch High School its fifth win of the season. McCullar's skill set continues to shine in every appearance he gets, through kick and punt returns or as the leading receiving option for the Mustang offense. McCullar's showing against Fulshear saw him secure five catches for 117 yards and two touchdowns, enough to easily secure the win against their district opponent. Diggy and the Mustangs will be back in action on Saturday against a struggling Cypress Park squad.
Kingston Beyer stands tall as this week's lone defensive selection, but with great cause. The All-Saints standout and future Wyoming Cowboy suffocated the Southwest Christian attack by bringing in eight tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery in All-Saints' 56-13 victory. Beyer continues to be one of the very best defensive linemen in the 2027 class, and he looks to pay off this rock-solid defensive reputation in All-Saints' upcoming game against Grapevine Faith on Friday.
We will be back again next Wednesday for another edition of the Showtime U Blog. For a chance at making the cut, send in your stats and highlights so our Podcast hosts can highlight the very best of each week's action.
